- Call 911 and begin cooling body
- Remove equipment and excess clothing
- Cool athlete as quickly as possible in whole-body ice water bath within 30 minutes. (This should happen before moving the athlete in an ambulance, provided that appropriate medical care and emergency equipment are available.)
- If immersion equipment isn't available, place athlete in a cold shower. Or move athlete to a cool, shaded area and cover as much of the body as possible with cold, wet towels that are changed frequently.
- Monitor and maintain athlete's airways, breathing and circulation.
